Music reviews of Bonfire

Music Review: The essential AC/DC
Rating: 5 Stars

The ultimate deffinition of "classic rock", the entire focus of Jack Black in The School of Rock, creator of the most classic riffs of all time. AC/DC, the power, the muscle, the fire, all in one band. Two brothers young, and one of the most awesome lead singers of all time; Brian Johnson's got nothing on Bon Scott.

If you ever have to define a band, you'll usually go with the sellingest album of their career, in this case the beyond diamond BACK IN BLACK. In this instance however, you'll have to define them with this boxset. This is them at the peak of bar-rock powers, pretty much defining the rock guitar all over again every night, slaying the audiences joyously.

Back In Black, now don't be fooled, was nothing but a pop-rock masterpiece that old fogey's listen to. This, Bonfire, is for the serious AC/DC fan, although this too, includes a copy of Back In Black. Heck, you might as well START with this set. I mean, you'll never hear a better version of anything off of "Highway To Hell" again, after this. Sure though, I listened to the black album a million times like everybody, but this completely floored me to extinction of Back In Black.

For instance, every track on this set is classic garage-rock sound, just dirty Angus Young playin' for all he has every night, riffing to the ground, stabbing you Angus Young-style with his guitar, as hard as he can. Everything on Live In Paris, which carries the cover of Let There Be Rock, is the ultimate version of every song, the best live cd the band has ever put out. Much less tame than the studio albums, some of this stuff is so loud, you could listen to this album(two-disc) with one decibel, and still be hurting the next morning like you'd gone to see them live the previous night.
The Live from Atlantic Studios recording is pretty good too, not as rough as Live in Paris, but better than their combined studio efforts.

Crowd, silence, then out of the distance, the rising tide of Angus Young's traditional finger-bang, rising majestically out of the air like in some great Greek forum on the eve of the battle between good and evil. Bass booms in, and Drums pound, while the Guitars are thrown in the mix altogether. Then, like some drunk catching on to to a bar song, Bon Scott slowly begins chanting lyrics. His thick australian accent does only but advance his tender, seducing whisper. A shot of red suddenly pores out of the mouth, that ancient tomb screech like the howl from some lost year. All of it comes together like a gathering storm, hailing on random, lost Texas cattle. You are the cattle, the demon-thunder head's audience, and you can only get absorbed into the tide of lightning splurging from the seven tongues of the tall, limpid, yet defiant figure of Bonn Scott.

Live Wire begins like that, a slowburning piece of the road, made into a song. Full blown adrenaline rushes through the body when those riffs come to a head at the forefront of speed and danger; best enjoyed in a fast car. The others, like Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be, ride that same insane path of purpose, driving in and out of chorus and manic, wild lunatical guitar thrash. The best of both discs has always been, for me, the absolute meltdown of syncronicity in the closer: Let There Be Rock. Angus just busts in and rides the wave of guitar god-solo for four minutes, to clattering applause.

It would appear that this set was merely just a homage to the great lead, Bon Scott, and it is very successfuly.
The only question one might ask is why they didn't release these live recordings as independent albums, remastered and independent of the box set along with their newly remstered studio recordings. These live sets are so essential to the AC/DC history, image, and catalog, that they more than dwarf Back In Black, Highway To Hell, Let There Be Rock, and the newer AC/DC LIVE. These are the greatest lost gems I have ever found in researching past music that has been forgotten by most people.

Some of this stuff is so bad, it rivals Iggy Pop's Raw Power. Buy that too.
