Music Review: Havin' The Time Of My Life!

This is one of the best live albums I've ever heard! I know people who have listened to this are put off by the synth drum re-dubbing but who cares? This is one of the few opportunities to listen to one of the greatest groups live! Another compilation "live" album I have is the "Blues Brothers Greatest Hits" (which is also great) and, while the songs are superbly interwined from three albums (minus the last three tracks), the two songs from the actual movie seem out of place because they weren't recorded live (the film and album versions sound noticeably different in music and vocals). But back to ABBA. It is a real treat to have songs that aren't present on most compilations like "Two For the Price of One" or "On and On and On". Frida shines on "I Have a Dream", "Super Trouper", "Fernando" and "Money, Money, Money" and Agnetha is perfection on "Chiquitita", "Thank You For the Music" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!". "Take A Chance On Me", "Does Your Mother Know" and "Dancing Queen" just burst with energy and make you feel like dancing! If you're an ABBA fan, give this one a chance!

The drum sound is heavy and full, the overall effect crystal clear and pristine. Harmonies are immaculate, melodies melt in your heart. Has "Does Your Mother Know" ever sounded so powerful? Was "Dancing Queen" really this infectious? The applause between tracks definitely helps the atmosphere, while both the opening, stuttering start to "Take a Chance on Me" and the piano-backed, over-the-top production on "Thank You for the Music" are simply spine tingling. --Everett True
