Music Review: A novelty act that will eventually die out

Being a fan of post-hardcore, I am continually dissapointed by bands that falsley ape the sing/scream formula. A Day to Remember is one of those bands. Instead of creating their own sound they take the extreme difference of pop music and heavy music and try to mesh them together. It's obvious they want to appeal to both pop-punk fans and hardcore fans, but they fail to grab either side with their album Homesick. Their pop punk sensibilities are much more in tune than their fake hardcore sound that incorporates overdone vocal screams and incredibly generic and boring breakdowns. The lead singer does have a good voice, but everything feels forced in this album, even though they're wisely going more towards the pop-punk end of the spectrum. Their is a fine line in creating good songs that traverse the musical spectrum of nice and harsh sounds and emotions, but A Day to Remember don't know how to create these. They're not the worst band in the world, but it's apparent that if they chose a single type of sound they'd be a better band for it. Leave the sing/scream sound to musicians better suited to it's intricate song structuring.
