Music Review: 3 1/2 stars for pop perfection minus lyrical gravitas

I like Nina Persson's voice, and she knows how to phrase a line. The music and arrangements on this album are tuneful and sweet, the instrumentation is full and well-played. I love the chord progressions, and the "middle eights" (the musical sections that add variety and break up the verse-chorus-verse-chorus pattern). If you've heard the last two Cardigans studio albums, you'd not be surprised by anything on Colonia, though guitars are much less evident. Country or rock influences are not strong -- at least Colonia is the softer side of rock.
The record goes down like an angel food cake. I was entertained. Some of the tunes are better than others, but that's not unusual. I especially liked The Crowning, Love Has Left The Room, and My America.
Some of the music may grow on me even more with repeated listening. The lyrics are OK, sometimes clever. My major reservation is that they're fairly devoid of soul. At least that's how they struck me. What are the songs about, exactly? Apart from some clever rhymes about love, about some pompous figure in The Crowning -- historical or contemporary (or both), and vague geographical references, I'm not sure. The songs could have been sung in Portuguese, or more appropriately Swedish, and still be pleasant to the ears and have nearly equal meaning to me.
So in the final analysis, I'll grade the musical composition as a B, the vocals-arranging-playing-production as an A+, and the lyrics as a C. This is good music, but lightweight. A positive 3 1/2 stars. I downloaded this album on a sale at the amazon MP3 store, and I'm happy. If I'd paid full price, I might be disappointed.
