Music reviews of Transistor

Music Review: Not Their Strongest Set
Rating: 3 Stars

311 came up with their own style, at its core an energetic mix of funk, raggae, rap and power chords. All these guys are truly talented, but by TRANSISTOR, their style was becoming a bit played, prompting the group to try some different ideas (although the follow-up, SOUNDSYSTEM, was a welcome return to form). Most of these songs come in under 3 minutes, feeling a bit dashed off with sub-par melodies or lyrics. There are a few bright exceptions though.

The breakdown:

One of the cooler things about this album is the hidden track that appears BEFORE the first cut. It's an appropriately bombastic intro (also used in their ENLARGED TO SHOW DETAIL video) with excellent shredding from super talent Tim Mahoney. ****

"Transistor" - makes for a rather mechanical opener, an obligatory brag and a dis on music critics. Kinda weak, really. **1/2

"Prisoner" - has a sort of spacey, carnival feel and a good vibe. ****

"Galaxy" - the music is not compelling and the SA rap is cheesy. **

"Beautiful Disaster" - classic 311. Some screwy lyrics, but who cares. However, parts of it sound a bit too much like their previous hit "Down." Gotta take off a point for that, sports fans. ****

"Inner Light Spectrum" - tries for a laid-back, mellow groove, but I just can't be bothered, especially with SA's too-stoned lyrics about Babylon or whatever. **

"Electricity" - another mechanical flow similar to "Transistor," more lazy, uncomfortable lyrics. **1/2

"What Was I Thinking" - starts off with thumpin' bass from bad-a** P-Nut, this one has bite and features distorted vocals from Nick Hexum. ****

"Jupiter" - good beat but comes off a bit cheesy esp. during SA's part. 311 themselves seem to suspect they are running out of ideas when Hexum sings, "One thing I've got to say before sales dive/ Stay positive and love your life." Right Nick. We got it the first hundred times. ***

"Use of Time" - acoustic guitar, a swinging chorus, it's certainly a different direction for 311. Great guitar soloing too. ****

"The Continuous Life" - cool song written by monster drummer Chad Sexton (who writes a fair amount of TRANSISTOR) with a solid rap from SA. ****

"No Control" - solid cut with a good Hexum melody. ***1/2

"Running" - pretty music, cool rhythms. ****

"Light Years" - Weird, fun tune. ****1/2

"Creature Feature" - starts out rather blissful 'til it goes "slippin' into darkness" while kickin' in with a standard 311 power chord sound. ***1/2

"Tune In" - pretty standard 311, moderately groove-worthy. ***

"Rub-a-Dub" - dubby, spacey fun. Good melody. ****1/2

"Starshines" - very basic 311 with a big slice of cheese. **

"Strangers" - nice, laid-back groove. ***1/2

"Borders" - rocks fairly hard but just isn't compelling. **1/2

"Stealing Happy Hours" - I have friends who really like this one, but for me it's just not the blissed-out lighter-waver it's intended to be. Kinda sweet, though, it's OK. ***

If you're new to 311, definitely start out with MUSIC or GRASSROOTS instead.
