Music reviews of Don't Tread on MeMusic Review: There is a reason this album is topping the charts! Rating: 4 Stars
**Added December 2006 - 311 sold out many of their Unity Tour 2007 shows, including over 18000 attendance to their Atlanta performance, all with little promotion and no new album release in 2006. This album was also one of the top albums of the year as well as for 311, topping at #5 on the Billboard charts. This album is having an effect on the "underground" rock scene.
Don't tread on this album. Reviewers for music are a lot like Democrats in how they mull over the same syntax and limericks they find to be so cute. If the Red Hot Chili Peppers are doing so great in the "new sound" creation world, where are they, and where's there new chart-topping album. (I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so don't get me wrong!)
If I could I'd give it 4.5 stars!
This album has taste, if anything, so let's break it down:
First off, I'll go on my tangical limb and my own opinion that 311 is to today's music what Pink Floyd was and still is. You will continue to hear, see, and hear about 311 for the next half century at least.
"Don't Tread on Me"
Hexum comes back to back with SA to deliver a theme based on the centuries old get outta my face term that started this country off with the famous "Don't Tread on Me" striped flag flown against the British by early American patriots. (Don't know about it -- then study the history dude. This is big time symbolism!) Sweet sound. Check out it's evolution by checking out the track demos from 311.com.
"Thank Your Lucky Stars"
Thank your troops, past and present, as well as the banner under which you live is the theme of this song. SA busts out in his original grassroots style to give this song some backing. The cadence changes help too. Count them, there are plenty to go around. The FX rock as well.
"Frolic Room"
Hexum loves this place. Though it's not the 311 Music chill song, it is a nice sound for 2005-06. Keep on stealing those happy hours guys. (This would make a nice techno remix...anyone?)
"Speak Easy"
Need a song to chill to? Make out to? Heck, you could even propose to that 311-lover chick you've been trying to win over for the past year to this song. This one was written up by, who has been argued to be the best R&R drummer of our time, Chad Sexton. Nice licks and plenty-o-rhythm make this one a catchy but sincere 311 masterpiece. Any wonder why they played this one live on the Dick Clark Show on New Years Eve?
"Solar Flare"
311 loves to shoot up flares against oppressors. Especially ones who continue to oppress them and their renegade and very much original style of music, not to mention the mass media and those who have a problem with standing up for themselves while others take the hit from streamlined media. Yes, they are obviously sick of played out eminem tunes on the airwaves, and nonstop complaints from the political worlds. This one drives with power chord magic only Hexum, Mahoney, And P-Nut could conjure up, not to mention the teched out rap-lyrical style of SA Martinez. Where is that "Res in Pine Ridge" anyway?
"Waiting"
This one is a new style song based on their evolved style that was so apparent in their music done for "50 First Dates." In other words, if it sounds like they are writing for a musical, then you've caught on to the sound. This one could be played years from now in the band stands at your college football game. Hey, it has worked for the "Hey Baby" song for almost fifty years. The riffs in this bluesy-east-coast song take me back to when I...
"Long for the Flowers"
Different. Nothing quite sits together in this song. Which I think adds to the dynamic of the lyrical prose which they are emulating. As time goes by, people change, and the changes in this work make it a newer 311. Mahoney does a nice job taking it away with his sweet-and-sour guitar solo that leaves it all behind. Kind of like we do.
"Getting Through to Her"
This is one of my favorites. Any time SA gets a chance to bust out on his own, he does a great job. I'll refer the ignorant to his bust out track on Grassroots (track 7) as evidence. This one will bring out the girls at the concerts for sure. Of course, this one takes a turn into an evolved direction. It was co-written by the sound engineer. Take it away SA!
"Whiskey and Wine"
"...Killing me, a shot at a time..." It's a Hexum/SA reggae track that finds it's roots in the days before Marley. Trust me. If you listen closely, it is '70's enough to sound like something the Eagles could have done. Which is fitting for it's liquor-based theme. Who doesn't associate Daniel's with the '70's? Wasn't everyone at the club getting town to GFR? Now they'll just chill at the bar to 311. Hexum does a nice switch in style, adding to the theme with higher pitched notes than he usually sings, which adds to the aura of the tune. It sounds great on the radio, too.
"It's Getting OK Now"
Turn this one UP! Anyone who likes a beat, a guitar, and some bass will enjoy this track. A nice addition to the repertoire. What is it now 60+ all-original tunes?
"There's Always an Excuse"
No one reading this review will remember this, but this one reminds me somewhat of Brian Wilson's genius in "Shutdown", and "Shutdown Part II". You had "Jacks Rule the Realm" on Evolver in which everyone was like...woah! What the...This is different! And like I said before, it is like a 311 smoothie; every part of 311 is apparent in that track. This is part two, just like Brian Wilson did with the Beach Boys. It's not the same licks, but it has the same feel, and a similar message. It's like a smoothie with ginseng. A bit more edgy, but flows through the music pipelines just the same.
You want punk, you want rock, you want reggae, you want rap, you want jazz, you want psychadelia, you want solos, you want amazingly meaningful lyrics...
Then 311 is your band. This is not one of their converting CD's. So if you are not familiar with them, check out Grassroots, Transistor, and Soundsystem first. Only then my friend, will you understand...

Description of Don't Tread on MeJapanese edition includes the bonus track "Little Brother". 311?s place in rock ?n? roll history seems secure. Unfortunately, so does its sound. Unlike other funk-inflected acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even Incubus, 311?s never fully expanded on the promise of its initial musical vision. On Don?t Tread On Me, the band?s eighth studio release, P-Nut and the gang seem intent on mining the same familiar terrain they have since their 1995 self-titled classic. Fans of albums such as 2001?s From Chaos and 2003?s promising Evolver will likely find Tread familiar and perhaps even comforting, but it?s unlikely to invite a new horde of fans as the album often sounds like an imitation of the bands 311 helped inspire in its decade-plus career. There are some nice touches. "Speak Easy," "Waiting" and many of the other tracks evoke images of sandy beaches and warm summer breezes, but none are strong enough to help Don?t Tread On Me stands out from the herd. --Jedd Beaudoin
