Music Review: beautiful devotional music

One senses Miss Kanda's love for God in the way she plays these devotional classics. There is nothing flashy here, but her sound is gorgeous. I don't think there are any trombonists who could play this music more effectively.
An interesting feature of this CD is that many of the selections are in three or four-part harmony, with Miss Kanda playing all of the parts.
The one quibble I have is the last piece, which I find jarring after the meditative selections. This last piece, "Good Luck," is a heart-throbbing rendition of the theme music from a popular Japanese TV show. Evidently the CD first came out in Japan, and this may have been a draw for the Japanese.
Miss Kanda's other CD, "Amazing Grace," is, to me, even more interesting. That CD includes gospel music, some selections with an African American choir.
Description of Gloria
Megumi Kanda was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1975. She began to play the trombone at the age of ten. She continued her studies at the prestigious Toho High School of Music in Tokyo, where she studied with the principal trombonist of the NHK Symphony. At age 15, she became one of the youngest players ever to be named as one of the top ten trombonists at the Japanese Wind and Percussion Competition. Two years later she won the grand prize in the National Competition for Solo Trombone and won best soloist prize upon graduation from the Toho High School of Music. She came to the US in 1994, and received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with Mr. James DeSano, the principal trombonist of the Cleveland Orchestra. She is currently principal trombonist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.General CDs
