Music Review: A Great Collection Especially For Ballad Fans
Rating: 4 Stars

Mariah Carey released her album "#1s" in 1998. Although she constantly protested that it was not a greatest hits album (in the liner notes, Mariah wrote "...not a greatest hits album! It's too soon, I haven't been recording long enough for that!", most find it hard to think of this album as anything other than a greatest hits compilation. All but four of Mariah Carey's singles at the time of this release had reached number 1 on the charts (the four that didn't were "Anytime You Need A Friend", "Can't Let Go", "Make It Happen" and "Without You"). The album consists of Mariah's twelve number 1 hits, a personal favourite and three previously unreleased songs.

The album starts off with a new song, "Sweetheart" which was produced by Jermaine Dupri. This song is the first upbeat song on the album (and the only one I personally enjoy). Mariah sounds very playful and innocent in this song and Jermaine Dupri's rap is actually pretty good. Unlike many rap parts I have heard in songs, it is easy to understand what Jermaine is saying and he doesn't sound too bad with Mariah. Next comes "When You Believe" a duet with Whitney Houston that was originally in the Disney movie "The Prince Of Egypt". The lyrics to this song are very beautiful ("Hope seems like a summer bird, too swiftly flown away") and it is one of my all-time favourite duets. After this comes Mariah's personal favourite, "Whenever You Call". This version is not the one that appears on her album "Butterfly". This version is a duet with Brian McKnight and personally, I find this version much better. Mariah and Brian sound amazing together and it is a truly beautiful song.

Next comes the lonely, vulnerable-sounding ballad "My All" from the album "Butterfly". This is a Latin-tinged ballads that Mariah puts a great deal of emotion into. Mariah wrote the lyrics to this song and they are simply stunning. ("I'm thinking of you, in my sleepless solitude tonight, if it's wrong to love you, then my heart just won't let me be right"). Next up is "Honey", another upbeat track. The main problem with most upbeat songs on this album is that they disrupt the flow and do not showcase Mariah's vocals as well ("Sweetheart" being the exception). Personally, I am not a fan of Mariah's upbeat songs so this doesn't do too much for me. This song was also written by Mariah (the lyrics were written by her, and the music was co-written) but, while the lyrics are good, it doesn't showcase her talents as well. "Always Be My Baby", a mid-tempo track, comes after. While there is nothing particularly bad about this track, it does not stand out very much when heard among all of the stunning ballads.

After this comes "One Sweet Day", a duet with Boyz II Men. The members of Boyz II Men sound awesome with Mariah and the lyrics are very touching. ("And I know you're shinging down on me from heaven, like so many friends we lost along the way"). Many people do not seem to be a fan of this song but I think it is beautiful. "Fantasy" comes next which features a rap part by O.D.B. of the Wu-Tang Clan. This upbeat song was poorly placed on the album and the rap really brings down the quality. Next comes a debatable career highlight entitled "Hero". The uplifting lyrics describe the search for your inner-hero or self-worth. ("There's a hero, if you look inside youself"). The lyrics are a little more simple in this song but are still elegant. "Dreamlover" comes after and does very little to impress me. It is a good song to dance to, however it contributes little to the quality of the album.
The next four songs, "I'll Be There", "Emotions", "I Don't Wanna Cry" and "Someday", follow a somewhat odd pattern. "I'll Be There" and "I Don't Wanna Cry" are both stunning ballads whereas "Emotions and "Someday" are average upbeat tracks. "I'll Be There" is a duet with Trey Lorenz and is a remake of the Jackson 5 song. The lyrics are sweet and well-written ("Should you ever find someone knew, you know she better be good to you, because if she isn't, I'll be there") and the voices of the two singers go extremely well together. "Emotions" is a favourite of most fans however I do not see the appeal. Most say this song showcases great vocals and a range of emotions but I cannot pick up on either of those. "I Don't Wanna Cry" is another personal favourite. This song was originally on Mariah's debut and showcases her writing and vocal abilities extremely well. "Someday" is an average and not very memorable upbeat track that is also poorly placed since it is between some of the most beautiful ballads.

The final three tracks, "Love Takes Time", "Vision Of Love" and "I Still Believe" are all personal favourites. The first two of those three were originally on Mariah's debut while the latter is a remake of a Brenda K Starr song. "Love Takes Time" is sweet yet melancholy. It describes how it takes time to heal after you've been hurt emotionally. "Vision Of Love" has more of a blues style that showcases Mariah's vocals particularly well. "I Still Believe" is my favourite of the last three tracks. In it, Mariah sounds gloomy yet hopeful and it is one of the best songs to showcase Mariah's vocals.

Overall Mark: 4/5

Overall, Mariah gives us a mostly solid compilation album. The ballads were simply breathtaking, due in large part to Mariah's vocals and range. Unfortunately, the upbeat songs on the album, with the exception of "Sweetheart", left a lot to be desired. While they were decent songs, they seemed somewhat out of place and may have sounded better had they been arranged better throughout the album. Mariah's duets were all stunning and the album for the most part was incredible.

Description of # 1's

CD
Mariah Carey's #1's is as much a time capsule of '90s pop and R&B as a record of one woman's chart toppers: the disc chronicles a shift from the sweet, nearly '50s-style "Vision of Love" to more recent hip-hop-lite grooves featuring heavy input from Puffy Combs ("Honey"), Jermaine Dupri ("Sweetheart"), and O.D.B. ("Fantasy"). Some hit, some miss, but all feature the fluttery swoops that Carey substitutes for expression of feeling. Depth is beside the point, but few of these tracks are even fun. Still, after eight years, there seems to be no stopping her, and this album will hardly break her streak of successes. --Rickey Wright
